There’s a difference between getting more traffic and building a growth engine that works while you work.
A few years back, a regional manufacturer with global distribution partnered with us on what started as a modest SEO project. The goal was straightforward: improve search visibility for their B2B product line. But like most things in digital, the surface-level request turned out to be only part of the story.
Once we got into the data, we saw something unexpected.
While our mandate was focused on B2B, the analytics told a different story. A significant portion of traffic was coming from individuals—likely DIYers, contractors, or hobbyists—who weren’t looking to place large orders or request quotes. They were just trying to buy a product.
They were consumers.
From Being Known to Being Found (by Everyone)
At the start, most traffic came from people who already knew the brand. Direct traffic dominated, which meant there wasn’t much discoverability. If you didn’t already have the name in mind, you weren’t going to find them in a search.
So we dug into what people were searching.
Through detailed keyword and behavioral research, we identified terms tied to common product problems, niche applications, and high-intent commercial solutions. That’s where we focused the SEO buildout for the B2B side—pages, structure, and messaging. But we didn’t stop there.
We also built in small, purposeful elements to route that consumer traffic. Simple navigation cues. Clean links to the retail locator. Just enough structure to catch the B2C visitors and send them to where they could take action.
And it worked.
How the System Delivered More Than It Promised
Over the course of two years, that “unscoped” B2C layer drove over $200,000 in additional revenue.
The internal sales team wasn’t tracking these customers. They didn’t come in through lead forms. But the system did its job: it got the right people to the right place. And the business saw the upside. Our client has to spend a few hours tracking data from different systems and has created a new process to track this in the meantime.
Meanwhile, the B2B visibility continued to improve.
We mapped organic terms to real solutions and cleaned up the technical structure. We guided content, improved trust signals, and connected web performance directly to downstream CRM data. As a result, search became the #1 channel for new user acquisition—eventually outperforming direct traffic nearly two-to-one.
Enterprise accounts that had never been prospected began to show up as inbound leads. The team didn’t cold-call them. They just arrived. Found through search, guided by the system, and converted by the experience.
This Worked Because It Was Aligned
Not because we chased vanity metrics or checked boxes on an SEO checklist.
It worked because we built a marketing system that aligned with how people behave online. It served both the intended customer and the unseen one. And it kept delivering long after the scope ended.
Eventually, the company transitioned to an internal marketing team and a local vendor. We ensured the handoff was clean, with full system access and continuity of insight. No gatekeeping. No mystery. Just stewardship.
Because that’s how real partnerships work.
The Takeaway
We didn’t just optimize a website. We helped uncover two distinct revenue streams, shaped messaging for both, and delivered systems that made them visible, measurable, and repeatable.
This is what we mean when we say we build systems that clients can own. Not services they rent.
